If even after you taken ibuprofen or aspirin you toothache persists, there are some other ways that you can try to relieve the pain using some things that you have around the house already. These are temporary relief till you can see a professional to take care of the problem that is causing the toothache. While you always can use the over the counter tooth ache remedies, it seems that the pain always comes in the middle of the night on a weekend. Until you can get to a store or to the dentist try some of these remedies to see if you can sooth the pain.
Vanilla
Place 2 or 3 drops of vanilla extract on the tooth to relieve the pain, this should provide instant relief.
Potato
After you cut off a piece of potato place it on the sore tooth for about 15 minutes
Tea Bags
A warm Tea bag pressed against the tooth will help with the pain. The ingredients in the tea bag will sooth the aching tooth.
Clove Oil
This is a mild anesthetic and will stop the pain for a little while.
Antiseptic Mouthwash
Try Gargling with antiseptic mouthwash for a few minutes. It may feel better if you warm the solution up a little by holding it on the side of the mouth that isn't painful, the swish it around your mouth.
Warm Salt Water
Mix 1 tsp of salt in with warm water and use it like a mouthwash, don't swallow it, you will want to spit it out.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Mix one capful with 1 cup water and use this like a mouthwash several times a day. Be careful not to swallow this solution. Usually the bottles will have directions on it on how to use it as a mouthwash, always follow the directions.
Heating Pad
Sometimes the heat will help with the pain. Lay on the side that your mouth hurts to try to find some relief from the pain.
Dental Floss
Try flossing your teeth to see if there is any food caught between the tooth that is causing the problems. After you floss you can gargle with the warm salt water.
While these remedies may relieve the pain only temporary, it may be enough relief for you so that you can get some rest or be able to get an appointment to see the dentist. If the tooth is infected you may have to visit the local emergency room, while they will not do dental work there, they may be able to give you a prescription for the infection and pain.
